|According to the World Health Organization, 3 million people died of AIDS last year, "making it the top single cause of death among people ages 15 to 59."
This disease is a tragedy. I am ashamed that industrialized nations have ignored the abhorrent situation of hunger and disease in Africa. It is widely known that Africa has 30 million of the world's 40 million cases of AIDS, and yet little has been done. It is also a disgrace that drug companies have been largely unwilling to provide cheap HIV/AIDS drugs to the African people. Finally, the Bush administration's abstinence policies, which ignore proven methods of prevention, display a deadly preference of religious ideology over preventative medicine.
