Cringley is hit or miss for me, often miss. So his recent article on decaying solder piqued my interest, but with a load of skepticism. It seems like something similar to the CD decay scare of the 1990's where it was feared that the aluminum material could be inexorably destroyed by the plastic that surrounds it. In practice, the number of CD failures has been lower than feared. Makes me wonder how serious the issue of 'tin whiskers' truly is.
