It's often very challenging to emulate the guitar tone of your favorite artists. This is compounded by the way the mix alters your perception of the tone. For a great example of this, listen to the guitar tracks from Metallica's "One" all by themselves as compared to the original song. It's amazing how much the bass guitar and drums work together to make the guitar sound so heavy and thick. The individual tracks are actually quite anemic. (Thank to Owen for the link.)
