The Downside of Light Cars
There's been a lot of back-and-forth between rich consumers who can afford larger, fuel-hungry vehicles and those who espouse the environmental benefits of lighter, more efficient cars. The major argument from the large-car crowd has been safety to the occupants. A recent report seems to bear this argument out, with claims about 15% higher for lighter cars. It's difficult to say how significant this is, and how it compares to the environmental and geopolitical impact of more oil consumption, but I'd hazard a guess and say that the argument is still on the side of the lighter cars. Still, it's good to have some data to discuss instead of just conjecture and emotion.
